HMCS WINDSOR

HMCS WINDSOR SSK878 conducting trials in the Bedford Basin late afternoon on 13th December 2012.
HMCS WINDSOR is the former HMS UNICORN purchased from the U.K. in 2001.
HMCS Windsor's displacement is approximately 2,200 tons surfaced and 2,400 tons submerged....
Covered in anechoic tiles to reduce her detection by active sonar, the submarine is 70.3 metres long, 7.6 metres across the beam and has a deep diving depth in excess of 200 metres. The main hull is constructed of high tensile steel sections stiffened by circular internal frames. Equipment located outside the main hull is covered by the casing, which also gives the crew a safe walkway when the submarine is surfaced. The fin, which helps support the masts, serves as a kind of keel and provides a raised conning position.
Armament:six torpedo tubes and can carry up to eighteen Mark 48 Mod 4 heavyweight torpedoes for use against surface and sub-surface targets.
Windsor's sonar sets allow her to locate and track ships and other submarines “passively”, that is without transmitting on active sonar and thus giving away her location. She is fitted with radar for general navigation, attack and search periscopes (incorporating video recording and thermal imaging), and an electronic support measures suite. The ship has two diesel generators, each capable of producing up to 1,410 kilowatts, and one main motor. The generators are used to charge two main batteries, each consisting of 240 battery cells. These batteries are used to power the submarine, which can reach a submerged speed of up to 20 knots (37 km/h).

AFL New England Ctnd.

AFL New England
Crew of arrested AFL New England begins to make way home As ChroniceHerald in Halifax reports, some members of the crew of the stranded container ship AFL New England headed home Tuesday, with remaining officers expected to depart Wednesday. The beleaguered ship will be shut down entirely and left under the care of the Halifax Port Authority pending a creditor’s sale through the courts. “Members of the crew are understandably in high spirits to be making their way home,” George Malec, the authority’s vice-president of business development and operations, said Tuesday. Malec said the ship will likely remain tied up at the port for months. “It will go through the legal process as an asset, leading to a sale and eventual court settlement for creditors,” he said. It is the latest development in a saga that saw the German-owned vessel arrested by the Federal Court of Canada on April 27.

AFL NEW ENGLAND

This photo snapped on 24 May 2012.Seemed strange to be flying the Union  flag rather than the normal red Duster (Ensign). Then this on Vessel Tracker today :
Stranded ship slated to move to Ocean Terminals before beoming a hazard Authorities planned to move the "AFL New England" on May 26, 2012, after it has been anchored in Bedford Basin for almost a month as the company operating was shut down. The "AFL New England" is running out of fuel and food for its 14 crew members. The ship was slated to move with own engine, accompanied by a pilot boat, to Pier 33 at Ocean Terminals. The container ship was left stranded when New York-based American Feeder Lines International shut down its chartered New England container service on April 27. Initially, it was thought the ship would return to sea quickly, as soon as its German owners, Rass Shipping, found a new operator for the vessel. But then warrants for outstanding debt began piling up at the Federal Court of Canada, preventing it from leaving until it gets clearance from the court. The list of creditors that have a hold on the ship includes Portland Pilots Inc., Atlantic Pilotage Authority, F.K. Warren Ltd., Boston Harbor Pilot Association, Massachusetts Port Authority and Cerescorp Co. (56 min ago, by Timsen) . Hmmm,What next?

O-BOAT ex HMCS OJIBWA to Museum in Ontario

Ex HMCS OJIBWA shown here in the camber at the Gun Wharf, (Jetty Lima for you youngsters),NAD ,Dartmouth ,last July will be saved from the breakers.  The Minister of Defence,Peter McKay has signed an agreement which turns the Sub over to the Elgin Military Museum in St. Thomas Ontario. The vessel will be towed via a submersible barge similar that used to tranport Okanaghan last year.Operation will commence as soon as the tug/barge rig arrives. Now apparently in transit. A sister sub, Onandaga is preserved at Rimouski,P.Q. The R.C.N. operated three Oberon Class,O-Boats during the 60s thru 90s when the 'replacement' Upholder/Victoria boats became available. Maybe should have kept the O's going a bit longer says me! 20-20 hindsight.

FAREWELL AFL NEW ENGLAND

American Feeder Lines has apparently shot its bolt with the Halifax/Boston/Portland feeder service due to lack of traffic /interest in the service, this coming within days of the Province making a  half-million loan to the firm (not exercised ?). Not a surprise, the vessel plied the route almost empty over the past (part year) seldom showing a container above the main deck. A shame to see this fail as it was a worthwhile effort unfortunately the timing was probably not the best.Photo shot in the Basin this week.

STELLANOVA

Heavy Lift/Load cargo vessel STELLANOVA shown here in file photo of 25 October 2008 at Pier 9 when loading railway locomotives was again at Halifax this weekend to load out what may be the last such cargo through the port as the manufacturing plant is closing down. See Mac's article on the subject today for more details. Sad to see this type of technology leaving Canada which has always been a leader in railway engineering. Back to hewing wood and drawing water for Canucks I guess!
